The CHISEL self-build archive
CHISEL want to celebrate all those self-build pioneers who invested their time, labour and no-doubt tears into building their perfect home. Often built using the Segal Method, these projects were mostly completed by complete amateurs. With support and training from architects and experts, they provided the physical exertion and enthusiasm to create unique communities with the aim of minimal impact on the environment.
CHISEL are thrilled to look after a number of such self-build projects in London, the South East and Colchester. In this archive, we seek to record the history of these unique homes and provide resources which may encourage others to look at alternative ways of living.

It is largely thanks to Walter Segal and his Segal Method that CHISEL have so many wonderful self-builds to look after. He pioneered the development of timber-framed buildings that provide a more affordable option when compared to traditional brick construction. In our archive we celebrate his life, work and continuing legacy.
Fusions Jameen were London's first black housing co-op. Here we record the ground breaking work of this unique organisation. Their crowning achievement is probably the development of Nubia Way - which was the overall winner in the Quality Homes for Lewisham awards 1997.
Greenstreet
One of CHISEL's self-build schemes based in the London Borough of Lewisham, Greestreet is an example of what can be achieved when a community works together.
Roxborough
Located near Colchester, Roxborough was the first self-build scheme for disabled people in the country - making it unique and transforming the lives of the residents.
The Diggers
Nestled in the countryside on the outskirts of Brighton, The Diggers takes full advantage of the Walter Segal method to integrate houses within the natural environment – providing a calm, leafy place in which to live.
